Assembly Sites of Wales

The Assembly Sites of Wales pilot project was established following discussions at the 2014 meeting of EMWARG (Early Medieval Wales Archaeology Research Group) and the identification of assembly sites at the Pillar of Eliseg (Denbighshire) and Bayvil (Pembrokeshire).

Although considerable recent advances have been made in the understanding of these sites elsewhere in Britain and north-west Europe, they are currently very poorly understood in Wales, where early medieval written sources are sparse and non-specific.

The pilot project will trial the recording and analysis of possible and probable Welsh sites of assembly. It is an independent, collaborative initiative and, though not part of UCL's Landscapes of Governance project, will build on its experience and expertise in identifying these important but archaeologically elusive sites.
