Eurasian Crossroads Network (ECN)

The Eurasian Crossroads Network (ECN) spins out of the DREAM project, which focuses on Central Eurasian prehistory and archaeometallurgy.

The Eurasian Crossroads Network (ECN), which was established in May 2025, aims at fostering collaboration among researchers and students with an interest in the archaeology, history, and cultures of Eurasia, particularly its central and inner transcontinental spaces. This network is open to all researchers and students interested in the region, regardless of their specific research focus.

Our aim is to keep the discussion going beyond DREAM’s scope, encouraging interdisciplinary engagement and fresh perspectives. Our goal is to create a dynamic space where researchers at all career stages can exchange ideas, share resources, and engage in interdisciplinary discussions. By building strong academic and social connections, we hope to enrich the study of this vast and historically significant region.

This research network relates to ongoing thematic research at the Institute of Archaeology on 'Human Planetary Transfotrmations' and 'Material Worlds.'

Forthcoming/planned activities

To cultivate an active and engaged community, ECN will organise a range of events and activities, including:

  • Guest Lectures & Talks – We will host experts from around the world to present cutting-edge research on Eurasian archaeology, history, and anthropology, sparking discussions that cross disciplinary boundaries.
  • Workshops & Seminars – Designed to develop practical research skills, these sessions will cover topics such as digital mapping, archival research, archaeological methods, and manuscript studies.
     -
Future Crossroads: Charting New Paths in Eurasian Research (20 June 2025)
  • Reading Groups & Research Discussions: we will organise regular sessions where members can discuss key texts, present work-in-progress, and seek feedback in a supportive environment.
  • Resource Sharing & Research Support – Members will be encouraged to share bibliographies, datasets, and research materials. We also aim to facilitate access to funding opportunities, archives, and excavation projects, particularly for those working on their dissertations or theses.

Outputs, Public Engagement and Impact

  • Annual Conference & Special Panels – the ECN plans to organise panel discussions at major academic conferences.
  • Networking Events & Socials –the ECN will provide both formal and informal networking opportunities, including post-event social gatherings
  • Ultimately, podcast episodes/series will be developed out of ECN
