Profile

Walls across Eurasia: A Comparative Study of Linear Defence Systems and Great Empires

There is an interesting consistency in defensive strategy among Eurasia’s empires in the face of threats from northern enemies. Many long walls were constructed in the first millennium CE, such as Hadrian's wall of Rome, the Gorgan Wall of Sassanian and the Great Wall of Han. Such large linear projects seem to have become one of the main military priorities of central governments. This study will combine both quantitative and qualitative analysis to explore the similarities and differences between them, and further discuss the military strategies and colonial policies of different civilizations in dealing with other ethnic groups.
