Anthony Hoete - Honorary Senior Research Associate

Anthony Hoete is from the Patuwai sub-tribe of the dot-island (pop. 22) Motiti which lies 10km from the coast of the North Island of New Zealand. As such, Anthony is currently engaged in numerous sovereignty and Māori land claims involving the Waitangi Tribunal and Environmental Court.

Anthony is a Trustee of the NZ-UK Link Foundation which fosters innovative exchange between NZ and the UK and he is also Chair of Te Maru O Hinemihi which is working with both Britain's largest landowner, the National Trust, and Heritage NZ on a partnership exchange relating to the Māori meeting house Hinemihi.

Based in east London, Anthony is the founding Director of WHAT_architecture which has received awards including a RIBA National Award, a Prime Minister's Award for Better Public Building, a Civic Trust Award and a Guinness Record. Anthony has taught design at some of the world's leading schools including the Bartlett UCL, the Architecture Association, the American University of Beirut and the TU Delft where he published a Reader On the Aesthetic of Mobility (2003).

Anthony's research interest includes 'Game of Architecture', an interrogation of the work of WHAT_architecture. This practice-based research assembled a dialogue around the manner that architecture might embrace a different set of strategies in order to deliver buildings in an environment where the role of the architect is ever increasingly marginalised. The output of this research has a decidedly real world outcome: it lead to the acquisition of a site in Peckham and the ongoing property development into affordable housing.

• Game of Architecture: practice-based research undertaken with the RMiT and demonstrates gamefulness in architecture through 'action-replays'
• Blablablarchitecture: talking is the most powerful design tool yet is under represented in the history of architecture. The research manifest as the production of a radio show and subsequent podcast for the Arts Research Council on Resonance FM.

I am currently working closely with Dean Sully (Senior Lecturer in Conservation) on the Hinemihi project. Dean's work, and in particular his seminal Decolonising Conservation: Caring for Maori Meeting Houses (Routledge, 2008) outside New Zealand, challenged the architectural notions that I held regarding archaeology: that is the significance of buildings resides not in their material ( 'bricks and mortar') but in their use albeit past, present or future. This lead to the proposal for a UCL IoA course 'future archaeology' where we speculate as to tomorrow's built environment.
