The Ancients - The Nok Culture
2 April 2025
Kevin MacDonald (UCL Institute of Archaeology) was interviewed recently for an episode of The Ancients podcast on the Nok Culture of prehistoric Nigeria.

The Ancients is a podcast for all ancient history fans and is dedicated to discussing our distant past. Featuring interviews with historians and archaeologists, each episode covers a specific theme from antiquity.
In the heart of prehistoric Nigeria, a mysterious civilisation flourished - known today only through archaeology. The Nok Culture, symbolised by its striking terracotta figurines, remains one of Africa’s most fascinating yet overlooked ancient societies.
In the episode, broadcast on 30 March, Kevin MacDonald and presenter Tristan Hughes discussed the Nok - Who were they? Where did they live? And what can their incredible artistry tell us about Iron Age West Africa?
