British Academy International Fellowships

The UCL Institute of Archaeology is supporting applications for British Academy International Fellowships with an internal deadline of 31 January 2025 for consideration of applications.

The International Fellowships Programme, jointly run by the British Academy and the Royal Society, provides support for outstanding early career researchers to make a first step towards developing an independent research career through gaining experience across international borders. 

These 2-year awards are intended for non-UK early career researchers who wish to conduct research in the UK. Each award is expected to involve a specific and protected research focus with the award holder undertaking high quality, original research.

How to apply

Applications for internal IoA review

The internal deadline for applications is 31 January 2025, for which applicants will need to provide a CV (max. 2 pages) and a draft application (details below).  Applicants must have made contact with a member of Institute of Archaeology staff who will need to agree to mentor them and support their application. Mentors will need to provide a statement of support by the above deadline.

The draft application should take the form of a word document covering the following areas:

  • Research Proposal - please provide primary subject, project title, start date (duration is 2 years), reason for choice of UCL Institute of Archaeology as the host institution, abstract (max 200 words), research proposal (2 pages).
  • Ethics - please provide details of any special ethical issues arising from the proposal.
  • Previous contact - please provide details of previous contact with the proposed mentor.
  • Training Programme - please provide details of the training to be undertaken as part of this Fellowship (mentors should help advise in this regard).
  • Benefits to Individuals/Institution; Benefits to Overseas Country/Territory; Benefits to UK - please provide details of the benefits of this research project.
  • Outline of Data Management and Data Sharing Plan - please provide details if applicable.
  • Overseas Field Research - please provide details if applicable.
  • Eligibility - please confirm eligibility (PhD awarded date, not a UK citizen etc).

Eligibility

Applicants should have no more than seven years of active full time postdoctoral experience at the time of application (discounting career breaks, but including teaching experience and/or time spent in industry). They should be working outside the UK and not hold UK citizenship. Full eligibility requirements are detailed on the British Academy website.
