Kevin MacDonald presents Black History Month Lecture to UK Government Departments

UCL Institute of Archaeology Director, Kevin MacDonald presented the Black History Month Lecture to the Department for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities and allied Home Office departments on 13 October.

This hybrid lecture for over 140 registered participants was entitled: 'Ancient Civilizations of Sub-Saharan Africa: Cities and States - What Europeans Don't Know.'

Kevin has worked on field projects in Mali for over thirty years, on sites ranging from the Historic Era to the Late Stone Age, principally in the Gourma, Méma, Haute Vallée and Segou regions. He has also worked on the survey and excavation of Tichitt Tradition sites in the Dhar Nema region of Mauritania. His current research in West Africa focuses on the settlement landscapes and oral traditions of Waalo in Senegal.

After the lecture there were some Q&A sessions during which Kevin met two recent UCL SHS Faculty graduates currently working for the Home Office.
