Tracing Gestures: The Art and Archaeology of Bodily Communication

9 August 2022

The first volume in the new UCL Institute of Archaeology World Archaeology Series, published by Bloomsbury, is now available.

Tracing Gestures: The Art and Archaeology of Bodily Communication - Edited by Amy J. Maitland Gardner & Carl Walsh, Bloomsbury 2022 (bookcover)

Tracing Gestures: The Art and Archaeology of Bodily Communication, edited by Amy J. Maitland Gardner & Carl Walsh, examines the role of gestures in past societies, exploring both how meaning was communicated through bodily actions, and also how archaeologists can trace the symbolism and significance of ancient gestures, ritual practices and bodily techniques through the material remnants of past human groups.

The volume is based on the two-day conference on Tracing Gestures: The Art and Archaeology of Bodily Communication held at the UCL Institute of Archaeology in November 2014.

The UCL World Archaeology series, published by Bloomsbury, will showcase high-quality research across the full spectrum of world archaeology, archaeological science, heritage studies (including conservation and museum studies), and cognate disciplines.

The series, edited by UCL Emeritus Professor Ruth Whitehouse, welcomes submissions for authored and edited volumes from scholars worldwide in pursuit of its goals to bring together key areas of theoretical and substantive knowledge, improve archaeological and heritage practice, and increase diversity and representation in the discipline.
