Call for papers for Trial By Fire conference

This free, interdisciplinary conference is concerned with the transformative power of fire. Whether your interest lies in archaeomaterials, burned bone, pyrotechnology, or accidental burning, fire always leaves its mark and a wealth of information behind.

This conference aims to explore these events by bringing together ideas from across archaeological and anthropological sub-disciplines and aims to answer the following questions:

• Can fire be considered an artefact?
• How have people engaged with fire over the course of history?
• What can the aesthetics of a thermally altered object tell us about the burning event?
• How has the study of fire evolved within the literature? How can fire be harnessed as an experimental tool moving forward?

Call for papers

Participants are invited to contribute their work towards the development of this interdisciplinary understanding of fire. Abstracts are due by 15 February 2019.

Registration

The conference will take place at the UCL Institute of Archaeology on 17-18 May. Registration is now open and will close on 15 February 2019.

Keynote speakers include Tim Thompson (Teeside University) and Miljana Radivojevic (UCL). The event is being organised with support from Oxbow Books.
