4 December 2018

UCL Institute of Archaeology students Harry Platts and Victoria Ziegler have been awarded Society for Medieval Archaeology prizes for the best dissertations of 2017.

Society of Medieval Archaeology

Undergraduate student Harry Platts was joint recipient of the John Hurst Award for his dissertation entitled 'What is a moot hall and how did its conception originate and transform over time?'

Postgraduate student Victoria Ziegler was awarded the Philip Rahtz prize for her dissertation entitled 'From Wic to Burh: Comparing the archaeological evidence from the last phases of activity at mid Saxon sites in Lundenwic with the earliest phases of activity at late Saxon sites in Lundenburh.'

These awards are given to the dissertations, undergraduate and postgraduate respectively, that make the most original contribution to medieval archaeology (from AD c.400 to c.1600), submitted to a United Kingdom or Republic of Ireland university.

The Society for Medieval Archaeology was established to study evidence of the past, whether standing buildings, landscapes, buried remains or artefacts in museums. Membership of the Society is open to all those interested in medieval archaeology.
