Major advances into how to protect and preserve cannonballs found on Henry VIII's flagship vessel, The Mary Rose, have been made through a ground-breaking partnership between UCL, The Mary Rose and Diamond Light Source.

Researchers have been using powerful X-rays to look inside cannonballs found on the famous Tudor ship to try to find a way of preserving the shot, which will corrode if it is put on display.

The project has now been nominated for Rescue Project of the year 2019 in the annual Current Archaeology Awards which celebrate the projects and publications that made the pages of the magazine over the past 12 months, and the people judged to have made outstanding contributions to archaeology. The awards are voted for entirely by the public and voting is open until 11 February.

The winners of the 2019 Current Archaeology Awards will be announced on 8 March as part of Current Archaeology Live! 2019.
