History: | Formerly incorporated in the paving in front of St Columba's shrine. Allen/Anderson/1903, 398, describes it as in the enclosure at the W end of the Cathedral (i.e. Abbey). It was lying on the floor of the N transept of the `cathedral' (i.e. Abbey) when viewed by Macalister/1912. Now in the Abbey Museum. |

Lionard/1961, 126, 162, identifies this figure with Flann mac Maíl-dúin, abbot of Iona who died in 891, but the name is common, and the form of the script suggests 8th-century dating according to RCAHMS/1982, 187.
