| History: | Macalister/1949, 96, records that he first published the stone in 1903, and that `it was lying on the S. wall of the ruined oratory, on this island'. Okasha/Forsyth/2001, 154: `The stone was first recorded in June 1901 `built into the wall of the cella', that is, of the oratory on Inishvickillane ... However, in his full publication of the stone published in 1903, Macalister described it as `lying on the south wall of the little ruined oratory' ... The stone has been noticed several times in print between its finding and 1986, but all these reports are traceable to one of Macalister's accounts and do not seem to have been based on first-hand knowledge. Cuppage et al., whose work was based on an actual visit to Inishvickillane, looked for the stone on the south wall of the oratory and when they could not find it, recorded it as missing'. |

| Palaeography: | Macalister/1949, 96: `Evidently he forgot the C of MAC, and wrote the first stroke of the following R -- correcting the mistake when he realized it, by cutting the C across the intrusive letter. The little figure like a D, following the final C, I took to be a mere flourish'. Okasha/Forsyth/2001, 155: `The text was in half-uncial script .. Macalister, however, described the letters as `of strange form and the execution careless'. Certainly the letters seem to have been uneven in size, although Macalister's drawing shows serifs on several of them'. |
