Discovery:first mentioned, 1754 Borlase, W.
History:Okasha/1993, 122: `The stone was first mentioned in 1754 by W. Borlase; it was then `about four miles East of Michel'. It was still there in 1824...In August 1872 the stone was described as `in the vicinity of the inn', that is, the Indian Queen Inn...In 1906 Langdon stated that the stone `has been used as a gatepost'...In 1930 Henderson noted that the stone would soon have to be moved `on account of a road-widening scheme'. Some years later, however, when the road was widened, the stone was left `in the pathway, where it was an obstruction and in danger of damage'. On 15 February 1939 it was moved about 0.8 km into `the enclosure of the Church of St. Francis', that is, to its present position'.
