It has now been placed upright in the middle of an adjoining field about a furlong distant N.E. from the farm-house, where it was visited during the Meeting of the Cambrian Archaeological Association at Carmarthen in 1855'. Jackson/1953, 170--171 argues that the name in fifth-century Irish would have been *Quennovindagnas in the nominative, meaning `Little Whitehead'.
The name, therefore, not only shows syncope, but also the lengthening of the vowel from -i- to -e- and the reduction of -gn- to -n-.

Jackson/1953, 170: 'practically illegible'. McManus/1991, 64--65: 'Macalister's accompanying Ogam with its impossible Irish form BARCUNI for *Barcunas is imaginary...[there is] no ogam'. |
