Discovery:first mentioned, 1822 Petrie, G.
History:Petrie/1872, 45: `Dr. Petrie drew this inscription and cross in the year 1822. The stone he found lying in the burial-ground of an old church dedicated to St. Ciaran on Inis Ainghin, or Hare Island...Dr. O'Donovan, when engaged on the Ordnance Survey some years afterwards, saw this tombstone...This stone is not now to be found'.

Palaeography:CISP: The lettering is Insular half-uncial. At least two of the A's are in the 'OC' form. The A of the first line also has a squarish bow. The Rs are half-uncial as are the Ts, while the N is majuscule. The H is minuscule.
