Archaeology Training Project

About the project

This stage 1 Knowledge Exchange project, funded through UCL Innovation and Enterprise with UKRI – Higher Education Innovation Funding, will set out a road map to support the professional development of archaeology know-how for National Trust staff and volunteers, CBA members, and the wider interested public.

Many of the responses to the threats and opportunities presented by archaeology in our wider historic environment fall outside of the checks and balances of development management or other regulatory systems with a material consideration of heritage. UCL and its partners feel that there is an urgent need for those involved in implementing those changes to have a better understanding of the archaeology of those places and how to care for it. A lack of training opportunities has wider implications for community groups and members of the public interested in archaeology, limiting opportunities to diversify the sector and encourage alternative career pathways into the profession.

Timeline

The project launched in May 2023 and will run for 6 months. We will explore whether there is demand for an introductory course to Archaeology, undertake market analysis, conduct interviews, run a survey and hold 2 on-line workshops with our partners’ potential audiences.

Next steps

The Knowledge Exchange partners will create a wider partnership platform allowing us to gain support and funding so that we can start creating our course.
