ASE team hunting Neanderthals on Jersey’s Violet Bank featured on Digging for Britain

9 January 2025

This summer we were delighted to have Digging for Britain join us on part of our season surveying prehistoric sites in Jersey.

Three people stand behind a table covered in flint tools on a velvet cloth. Professor Alice Roberts stand in the centre holding up one of the objects as they all smile at the camera

Funded by our brilliant project partners Jersey Heritage, we are building on 15 years working in Jersey to understand, protect and share its deep history, as well as training students from the UCL Institute of Archaeology.

In this evening’s programme you can see ASE Geoarchaeologists Matt Pope, Letty Ingrey and Stefan Bryant surveying the Violet Bank, a spectacular intertidal landscape that preserves Neanderthal archaeology, guided by Jersey experts Nicky Mansell and Phillipa Kergozou.

Six people stand on a rocky beach area surrounded by shallow sea in bright sunshine

Later, alongside Olga Finch, Curator of Archaeology for Jersey Heritage, we join Professor Alice Roberts in the finds tent to talk through some of the star finds from the reef.
