ASE Takes Stock: Rebecca Pitt, Finds Processor

Current work and situation

I have managed to load up my Mini and squeeze about 30 boxes of archaeological material into my garage! I am currently going back through old sites to prepare them for a deposition to a London Museum. This has involved marking and re-bagging lots of sites ASE excavated from 2005-2016, and as a result I’ve seen a lot of amazing finds that I didn’t even know we had.

Looking back on last year

The Walberton burial was of great excitement for me, as I’m sure it was for a lot of people! Although I wasn’t on site to excavate, I was entrusted with the sword when it came out of the ground. As part of this job, I took it to Fishbourne to liaise with the conservator and to conduct X-rays myself. That meant I was the first person to see what the sword would have looked like in thousands of years! It was an incredible experience to see it and be so heavily involved with the most significant find at my time with the company.

Looking forward to post-lockdown

Being with my team again. I work with such incredible colleagues who keep me going whenever times get tough, and not seeing them every working day is very odd! Can’t wait to get the friendly and upbeat atmosphere back and also to eat the plethora of cake and biscuits that circulates the processing room…
