The impact of climate unpredictability on children's play and wellbeing in central London.

An increasingly unpredictable climate is reshaping the experience of childhood around the world. In London, there is growing evidence of the impacts of climate shocks on children (including extreme heat, prolonged rainfall, surface flooding, and intense winds). Unpredictable climate affects children’s health, security and learning, bringing extremes that families and early childcare providers cannot easily plan for. This project investigates the impacts of climate change on London’s children.
Through a collaboration between Anthropology, the Bartlett School of Architecture, and the Institute for Global Health, the project will combine approaches and frameworks to provide a new perspective on often overlooked but important impacts of climate uncertainty. The study will focus on children's play, which is vital for health and development, and on wellbeing in the context of unequal family, childcare and educational settings.
The work is funded by the UCL Climate Crisis Small Grants Fund.
