Rapid-fire questions with Emily Emmott, Senior Teaching Fellow in Biological Anthropology, UCL Anthropology

Emily Emmott - UCL Anthropology

What did you want to be when you were growing up?
I wanted to be so many things, from a florist to a pop-star to an industrial chemist. Never thought I would be an anthropologist!

Why anthropology?
I took a module in biological anthropology during my undergraduate degree without really knowing what it was - and I enjoyed it so much, I kept going! For me, biological anthropology helps you understand why people behave the way they do, while recognising the importance of cross-cultural differences and similarities. It encourages you to challenge norms and assumptions. In my research, where I investigate how social support influences parenting behaviours and child outcomes, that's really important.

What is your favourite cheap meal in London?
Love the lahmacun served out of a box-stall in Walthamstow market. It's £2.50 and fills you up.

What or who is the greatest love of your life?
My dog Lulu is the greatest love of my life. She is a 12.5yr old mini dachshund, and she occasionally comes to the department with me - so say hi if you see us! (She likes to sniff people's ankles.)

What do you consider your greatest achievement?
When I think about what I've done really well in, it's probably getting over the big rejections. Like when you get to the last 5 for a research grant that had hundreds of applications, but you don't get it after interview. Getting over those rejections and trying again is really hard- so it's important to congratulate yourself and recognise it as a great achievement.

How do you relax?
I make a large cup of tea, cuddle my dog & watch reality TV.

Which living person do you most admire and why?
I should probably say my husband here, as I said the love of my life was my dog.

What is your most treasured possession?
I like to collect handmade objects, usually jewellery and home-ware. My most treasured is probably my engagement ring. But I am also obsessed with an embroidered throw I bought on my travels in Mexico. It's absolutely beautiful and the craftsmanship is unbelievable.

What would your super power be?
Teleportation.

What is top of your bucket list?
More travel. More dogs!
