The AMOPP group are offering two Brian Duff studentships to undergraduates interested in pursuing research projects over the summer.

Brian Duff Undergraduate Summer Research Internships in the AMOPP group

Applications are now open for two Brian Duff Summer Research Internships to support undergraduate students undertaking research projects in the AMOPP group in Summer 2023.

These internships are available to UCL students in the Department of Physics and Astronomy who are currently finishing the 2nd year of a BSc or MSci degree, or finishing the 3rd year of an MSci degree. Natural Sciences students majoring in Physics and Astronomy streams may also apply. Project supervisors must be current members of academic staff in the AMOPP group.

Successful applicants will be awarded a bursary of £2000 for their internship, and are expected to work on their project for 8-10 weeks.

The application instructions are listed below. The application deadline is 17:00 on Tuesday 9th May 2023. Applicants will be informed of the outcome of the evaluation process within 1 week of this date.

Application instructions:

Applicants should contact a prospective supervisor and identify an appropriate research project before submitting their application. The student and supervisor should develop the project plan and application together.

For full consideration, applications must be prepared in A4 page format with margins of at least 2 cm, a minimum font size of 11pt, and contain the following components:

(1) A 1-page cover letter that must contain the following information:

- Project title

- Name and student number of the student

- Name of the supervisor

- Proposed start date and duration of the project

The cover letter should also outline the reasons behind the student’s interest in the particular project proposed, and state how the student expects to benefit personally from the opportunity to undertake the internship.

(2) A 1-page case for support that should include the scientific motivation behind the project, a summary of the research to be undertaken and how it aligns with the student’s experience at their current stage in their studies, and an approximate timeline highlighting the main research activities throughout the project period.

(3) A 1-page CV of the student.

These documents should be combined into a single pdf file and sent to Ms Amalia Bountoureli (a.bountoureli@ucl.ac.uk) with the supervisor in CC by the application deadline: 17:00 on Tuesday 9th May 2023.
