Professor Anthony Teitler

Research Degree, 2014-2018

Professor Anthony Teitler
Doing a PhD can be referred to as the loneliness of the long-distance runner but this was – fortunately – a very different experience to what I had! Indeed, having the support and friendship of so many at the IoA made the experience a very pleasurable and dynamic one. Whether it was intense discussions on ethics, theory, history, culture, economics, methodology and politics or organising conferences as a cohort or participating in events or activism, the whole time at the department was wonderful.

In choosing a PhD programme I was looking for a department and supervisor that would stimulate and challenge me and the Institute of the Americas was a great choice. Having the support of Professor Iwan Morgan in cultivating my historical, methodological and interdisciplinary approach to research was an unalloyed joy. Whilst it was a long process my capabilities – slowly but surely! – developed and I was thrilled to complete my doctorate, which I subsequently refined and turned into a book, US Policy Towards Afghanistan, 1979-2014: 'A Force for Good'. I will always remember my time at the IoA with great fondness.

Subsequently I have gone on to work in academia and am currently head of a range of social science programs at a German university.
