Dr María de Vecchi writes chapter for book on disappearances in Mexico

11 March 2022

Maria de Vecchi on AMLO's amnesty plan

Forced disappearances is a tragic phenomenon in Mexico. According to recently released governmental data, more than 98,000 persons were disappeared or not found in Mexico, to Mars 2022. Disappearances have occurred in the country since at least the late 1960s, with the vast majority of them still unpunished. Our alumna Dr María de Vecchi, a researcher in the matter, wrote the chapter 'Memorialising absence | Memorials to the disappeared in Mexico' in the book 'Disappearances in Mexico. From the ‘Dirty War’ to the ‘War on Drugs’, edited by Silvana Mandolessi and Katia Olalde, and recently published by Routledge (2022). Open access to the whole book is available here, whereas access to Dr de Vecchi's chapter can be accessed here.

Dr María de Vecchi

Dr de Vecchi obtained her doctoral degree from UCL Institute of the Americas in 2018. Her dissertation, titled '¡Vivxs lxs Queremos! The Battles for Memory around the Disappeared in Mexico' was supervised by Professor Kevin Middlebrook and Professor Paulo Drinot. Dr de Vecchi is currently analysis coordinator at Article19, a freedom of speech and information rights organisation. She is based at the organisation's Mexico and Central America office and her main remits are analysis and report on serious human-rights violations, especially attacks on the press, with a focus on macro-criminality.
