Black History Month 2021 at UCL Institute of the Americas

1 October 2021

Black History Month 2021

We mark the beginning of this year’s round of events both at UCL Institute of the Americas and throughout UCL. The study of Black History is very much part of what we do and what we teach at UCL Institute of the Americas: seminars, conferences, events series, research and dissemination and so many modules of our academic programmes at all levels are about Black History.

We celebrate the opportunity to contribute to this particular month-long commemoration, but for us, Black History is not confined to one month, one event or one announcement, and we hope we will capture your interest to learn more about what we do in this important area of knowledge. Please have a look at our events series and news section; our study programmes and the portfolio of undergraduate and post-graduate modules as well as our research projects to learn more about how we approach, study, research and live Black History at UCL Americas.

Amongst our events, first off is the inaugural event of our brand-new series Race and Racism in the Americas, on October 6: Whiteness in Latin America, followed by Deporting Black Britons: Portraits of Deportation to Jamaica on October 20. Later in the year we'll continue with Sister Style: The Politics of Appearance for Black Women Political Elites; Barbados's Transition to Republic Status; Inflections of Anti-Racism in Latin America and Cuba: An American History.

We hope you will be able to join us at these and all our other events. You can keep abreast of additional activities and aspects of our engagement with Black History, this month and throughout the year, via our social media channels: Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
