This roundtable will reflect on the outcome of the first round of the general elections in Argentina. On October 22, 2023, almost 36 million Argentine citizens cast their ballots for president, vice-president, and members of Congress. Forty years after the return of democracy in 1983, Argentina faces significant challenges, including a severe economic crisis, inflation rates exceeding 120%, and increasing political polarisation, all exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Our three expert panellists will analyse the results of this historic election and shed light on the possible scenarios that lie ahead.

Pilar Elizalde - Departmental Lecturer in Law and Public Policy at the Blavatnik School of Government and Associate Member at St Antony’s College, at the University of Oxford. Pilar also has fifteen years’ experience in the field of human rights, having worked, amongst other places, at the Observatory of Human Rights of the Upper House of the Argentine National Congress, the Center for Justice and International Law (CEJIL), and the UNHCR Regional Office for Southern Latin America.

Ezequiel Gonzalez-Ocantos - Professor of Comparative and Judicial Politics in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Oxford, and Professorial Fellow of Nuffield College. Most recently, he coauthored Prosecutors, Voters and the Criminalisation of Corruption in Latin America (Cambridge University Press 2023).

Luis Schenoni - Lecturer and Director of the Security Studies Programme in the Department of Political Science at UCL. Affiliated Professor at Universidad Torcuato Di Tella (Argentina). He is the author of Bringing War Back In: Victory, Defeat, and the State in Nineteenth-Century Latin America, which is forthcoming with Cambridge University Press.

Chair: Francesca Lessa - Associate Professor in International Relations of the Americas, UCL Institute of the Americas.
