Cuba is strengthening its capacity for local development in order to boost local economic dynamics and social welfare. This is part of a wider process of structural transformation and in the face of tightening US sanctions. In this presentation, Dr Leon Tellez will share insights from his research in the field of local development in Cuba, including the central role played by universities in capacity-strengthening and knowledge-sharing, particularly in the fields of science and technological innovation.
About the Speakers
Dr Ahmed León Tellez
Dr León Tellez is Director of the Center for Management and Local Development Studies at the University de Granma in Bayamo in the East of Cuba, where he also teaches modules relating to local and regional development, business administration and management at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has published widely on management and local development and serves on the editorial board of several academic journals He is a member of the National Committee of the Association of Cuban Economists, a member of the Cuban Academy of Sciences, and Secretary of the Cuban National Society of Local Development. He has extensive experience of presenting his research and coordinating workshops in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Discussants will include Dr José Luis Rodríguez and Dr Gladys Hernández, of the Centro de Investigaciones de la Economía Mundial (CIEM, Centre for Research on the Global Economy).
