Canadian Studies Conference 2019: The Canadian Forces in Britain during the Great War

Refreshments will be available from 11.00am and the conference will begin at 11.30am with a panel of three speakers – David Stirrup, Kate Rennard and Yvonne McEwen – discussing the experience and legacy of First Nations soldiers in Britain.
After a sandwich lunch, the second panel, starting at 1.45pm, will include presentations by Kent Federowich on ‘The Canadian Forestry Corps in Devon’ and Mark Minenko on ‘Undesireables and the enlistment of aliens in the Canadian forces’.
Further refreshments will be available at 3.00pm and the third panel, starting at 3.30pm, will comprise presentations on ‘The Temptation of War: alcohol and the Canadian forces’ by Luke Flanagan and ‘The Khaki University of Canada – Hope for a Better Future’ by Diana Beaupré and Adrian Watkinson.
The conference will end at about 5.00pm.
Speakers:
Dr Tony McCulloch is Senior Fellow in North American Studies at the UCL Institute of the Americas
Professor David Stirrup is Professor of American Literature and Indigenous Studies, School of English, University of Kent and Principal Investigator on the AHRC project ‘Beyond the Spectacle: The Native North American Presence in Britain’.
Dr Kate Rennard is a Research Associate at the School of English, University of Kent, and a contributor to the ‘Beyond the Spectacle’ research project.
Dr Yvonne McEwen is at the University of Wolverhampton and is a contributor to the ‘Beyond the Spectacle’ research project.
Dr Kent Fedorowich is Reader in British Imperial and Commonwealth History at the University of the West of England, Bristol.
Mark Minenko is a former solicitor and a current PhD student at Kings College London.
Dr Luke Flanagan gained his PhD from the University of Edinburgh and teaches Politics and Business at Eastbourne College as well as conducting independent research in Canadian Studies.
Diana Beaupré MSM and Adrian Watkinson MSM are independent researchers. In 2019 they were awarded the Meritorious Service Medal by the Canadian Government for their ‘Far From Home’ project memorialising some 3.900 Canadian casualties in the Great War who are buried in the UK.
