This commitment is also shared by UCL, which was one of only eight institutions to receive a Race Equality Charter Mark Bronze Award for its work in Higher Education, an award that was renewed in 2020.
As part of its self-assessment process, UCL has identified a significant awarding gap between home BAME students obtaining a "good" final degree result at undergraduate level when compared to home white students. At the Institute, we do not have these numbers yet since our first undergraduate cohort will graduate in 2021. Once data are available, we will derive an action plan to eliminate any awarding gap identified.
In the meantime, we are seeking to increase our recruitment of BAME students and staff, and we are working with our current staff to continue develop courses and events that reflect the diversity of our department.
The fact that the Institute and our programmes were developed relatively recently has allowed us to embed diversity at the heart of our curriculum design from the very start. We are now working to continually improve year on year, based on data and feedback from staff and students.
