This will be a special event at Cafe Port Glasgow. This year marks the 160th anniversary of the Choshu Five* going to England to study at UCL in 1863. The guest speaker will be Dr. Yumiko Yokozeki, an IOE graduate who has made a significant contribution to education in Africa. We look forward to seeing you all at the venue after two online meetings during the pandemic.

*The Chōshū Five (Chōshū Goketsu) were members of the Chōshū han of western Japan who travelled to England in 1863 to study at University College London. The five students were the first of many successive groups of Japanese students who travelled overseas in the late Bakumatsu and early Meiji eras. All five students later rose to prominent positions in Japanese political and civil life. We will have video messages from UCL and Mr. Yoshimasa Hayashi, Minister of Foreign Affairs, who grew up in Yamaguchi (former Choshu), for celebration.

This event will take place on Friday 14 July from 6:00pm  - 8:00pm JST.
