As we start the New Year, this virtual event will inspire us to seize new opportunities as we hear insights from UCL alumni industry leaders within Law, Health and Management sectors.

Open to all alumni and students, the event will include three short talks and a chance for you to ask questions to the speakers. This will be followed by Chai Connect - randomly pairing you with fellow alumni or students for a social speed-networking session.

About the Speakers

Marcus Ranney - UCL MBBS, 2008

Marcus Ranney
Marcus is a Champion of Wellbeing and the Founder of Human Edge. After practicing clinical medicine in London, Marcus worked as a Strategic advisor, Investor and Operator within the Healthcare and Life-sciences industry. He is currently a Senior Fellow to the Atlantic Council, working on a project exploring the relationships between the climate crisis and global health. An author, keynote speaker, digital talk show host and public health commentator, recognised as a World Economic Forum’s Global Shaper.

Augmenting his contributions towards global health commentary, the Covid-19 pandemic has brought Marcus back to the frontlines of medicine as a medical volunteer for his city’s fight against controlling the virus. Marcus has undertaken expeditions to the sides of Everest, skiing in the Arctic and the European Alps and has served as a medical officer in the Royal Air Force and at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. He also holds a Guinness World Record for backwards running!

Padmaja Kaul – UCL LLM, 2011

Padmaja Kaul
Padmaja is a Partner in the Dispute Resolution practice at IndusLaw and one of the youngest female partners in this largely male dominated field. Known for her fiery representation, throughout her career she has advised Indian, foreign and multinational clients in their corporate and commercial disputes before the High Courts, District Courts, and tribunals across the country as well as the Supreme Court of India. Padmaja has represented clients in leading arbitrations and has been nominated as a member of the Steering Committee of the Society for Construction Law, India- Young Leaders Group.

 An avid traveller, Padmaja has actively used her global adventures as inspiration in her profession, ranging from playing with Lemurs in Madagascar to climbing the side of an active volcano in Nicaragua. In her spare time, Padmaja contributes to various publications on issues of law and has also been an active speaker and moderator at various seminars, conferences and panel discussions.

 

Prateek Raj - UCL DPhil Management Sciences & Innovation, 2018

Prateek Raj
Prateek is an Assistant Professor in Strategy at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) and IIMB Young Faculty Research Chair, leading the IIMB Inclusive Markets Project. He studies the evolution of free and inclusive markets in history and developing countries. Prateek is also a Junior Fellow at the Stigler Center for the Study of the Economy and the State at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He did his doctorate from University College London (UCL) in 2018, where he continues to be an Honorary Research Associate. 

During his PhD, he was affiliated to the Center for Economic History and Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University (2015-2018) as a Visiting Predoctoral fellow, the Stigler Centre at the University of Chicago as a Research Associate (2016-2018) and tagught at LSE. He earned his B.Tech. in Production and Industrial Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD) and worked as a consultant for clients in Metal and Mining Industry.
