  • Our preferred subject areas are Physical Sciences (Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics and Physics) or Clinical / Biomedical Science.
  • Applicants with a clinical background or degree in Biomedical Science must be able to demonstrate strong computational skills.
  • You must be able to demonstrate an interest in creating, developing or evaluating AI-enabled Healthcare systems.

What Funding is Available?

Studentship Funding
What’s included? 4 years of the MRes/PhD funding including:

  • UCL academic fees (UK Home fees).
  • A tax-free stipend of £20,622 (2023 UKRI rate).
  • Access to a Research Training Support Grant to cover expenses for research trips/conferences or workshops.

Who can apply?
When applying for the CDT programme, you will automatically be considered for UKRI funding. All UKRI-funded doctoral students will be eligible for the full award – both the stipend to support living costs, and fees at the UK research organisation rate. However, UKRI international studentships are limited to 3 so places will be competitive.

Home students
Home students will be eligible for a full UKRI award, including fees and stipend, if they satisfy UKRI criteria, including residency requirements.

International applicants
International students are eligible for funding that would cover UK-Home tuition fees and a stipend to support living costs, however, our funding does not cover international fees. International students who are not eligible for UK home tuition fee rates may be eligible for a UCL scholarship. International Scholars Award for Doctoral Training  (ISAD) are awarded by UCL following a successful application to the CDT. Students interested in the ISAD should indicate this on their application.

Please note that UCL does not offer part-time study for Student visa students.

EU students
Students living within the EU who do not meet eligibility requirements for Home Fee status will need to submit applications as international students.

UCL Research Excellance Scholarships 2024
Applicants interested in applying for the  Research Excellence Scholarships must apply via UCL Select by 4 January. Unlike UKRI funded students, they must include a research project lay summary and a prospective UCL supervisor reference. Applicants will need to find their own UCL supervisor using the UCL Profiles to support their application. Finally, ensure you include in your application on UCL select that you are applying for one of these scholarships. Note: please ensure you submit all the required documents that are outlined on the scholarship websites.

Self-funded students
We are no longer accepting applications from self-funded students. If you are not eligible for UKRI funding we recommend you instead consider applying for the Health Informatics MPhil/PhD programme. However, we do welcome applications from students (Home/EU/International) who are in receipt of alternative scholarships.

Industry-funded Studentships
Students who wish to be considered for industrially sponsored projects should indicate their interest in their application. Industry-funded CDT projects will be advertised on our projects page when available. Industry-funded projects are more likely to be open to EU applicants who do not meet the above residency requirements.

If you have any questions about funding, eligibility, or general entry requirements please email aihealthcdt@ucl.ac.uk.
