Dr Jo Evans and Dr Breixo Viejo from the School of European Languages, Culture & Society (SELCS) have been awarded a research grant of up to £252,238 by the Leverhulme Trust to support 'Luis Buñuel: A Life in Letters'.

The Spanish-Mexican director Luis Buñuel (1900-1983) corresponded with filmmakers (Vigo, Fellini, Truffaut), writers (García Lorca, Breton, Fuentes), screenwriters (Aub, Alcoriza, Carrière) and actors (Rabal, Deneuve, Moreau), yet no comprehensive edition of this correspondence exists.

This project will run for three years from 1 September 2015 – 30 August 2018. Its aim is to source, transcribe and translate letters presently held in archives in Spain, France, the USA and Mexico, in order to establish a website with access to the complete correspondence and publish annotated editions in English and Spanish with an extensive new introduction to the life of the director. Buñuel: A Life in Letters will therefore uncover vital original material, shedding new light on one of the most important twentieth century directors. It will also provide an essential counterpart to existing biographies, and ensure the preservation of this correspondence and its dissemination to a wide readership. This project is supported by Luis Buñuel’s heirs; the Filmoteca Española (Madrid); the Filmoteca de la UNAM (Mexico City); and publishers Bloomsbury and Cátedra.
