The best apps for every UCL student

3 December 2021

There are many apps out there to help you navigate being a student in the big city. To help you find the best ones, UCL student Cansu Dilek recommends her favourites.

Transportation Apps

1.    CityMapper

By entering your current location and intended destination into the app, you can see the different ways you can get from A to B.

CityMapper includes the time and price of the transportation and also remarks on the calories that you will burn in each journey.

2.    Trainline

Via this app, you can book train fares within the UK. With a 16-25 Railcard, you are eligible for a ⅓ discount on train fares.

3.    Santander Cycles

Cycling is an environmentally friendly way to get around London. With your membership, you can cycle from each docking station.

The stations are all over London, however, there are more in Central London.

4.    TfL Go

This app shows the London tube map and each line’s destination, departing time and informs you whether there is planned work on the line.

You are also able to see how long your journey will take and find the closest tube stations.

5.    London Live Bus Countdown

This app shows the bus times in London, the bus destinations and when the bus will arrive at specific bus stations.

6.    Uber

You can book a private car for both your short and long journeys via these apps. With the Uber App, you are also able to book a boat trip in the River Thames London.

Food and Drink Apps

1.    UberEats and Deliveroo

Through these apps, you can order ready meals from the nearest restaurants. Both apps divide the restaurants into specific cuisines for users to pick what they want to eat easily.

2.    Getir

This is a 10-minute delivery app for groceries and other market items. It is a very convenient app to use when you have an urgent need from the market or if you are quarantining.

Getir also delivers to accommodation halls and university campuses.

3.    The Pub Finder

If there is one thing that is at every step in London, that is pubs. This app shows all the pubs in London submitted by locals and visitors.

You can also check the ratings and reviews of each pub and add your review.

Discount Apps

1.    Unidays and Student Beans

You can register for the Unidays and Student Beans app with your student email address. After registering, you can reach out to all of the student discounts of fashion, technology, beauty, food & drink, education, health & fitness brands.

Both apps are only intended for students, and you will be able to use them only with your verified student account.

2.    Vouchercloud

You can also access discounts and promotions via this app, however, you do not need to be a student to access the discounts.

Event Apps

1.    London Theatre Direct

This app shows all the upcoming musicals, plays and dance shows in London. You can also buy the tickets via this app.

2.    Fatsoma

You can buy clubbing event tickets from this app.

You can check the location, price and information regarding the club nights. UCL club nights are also sold from this app.

3.    Eventbrite

You can buy many different types of event tickets via this app.

You can check out holiday events such as Christmas markets, music events such as concerts and clubbing, food and drink events, workshops, and charity events.

UCL Apps

1.    UCL Go!

This is the most useful and convenient app that you can use at UCL. After registering with your UCL account, you can check your timetable and their locations.

There is a campus map and with the place finder, you can find every single room in UCL.

Other features include news radio and recent news and events. You can access your Moodle page via this app to check your modules.

And last but not least, its best feature is that you can check the study spaces in every single library and study room in real-time.

2. UCL Assistant

You can access your timetable, availability in UCL libraries, and book a room in the Student Centre. Additionally, you can search for members in the UCL community including students and lecturers.

3. AccessAble UCL

This app is designed for disabled members of the UCL community to get information on UCL buildings, halls, cafes, bars, lecture halls and toilets.
