About UCL iLAC
The UCL Integrated Legal Advice Clinic (iLAC), based in central Stratford, offers local residents free face to face general legal advice on all aspects of social welfare law including welfare benefits and housing.
Staffed by UCL law students working under the close supervision of qualified lawyers and advisers, the Clinic offers students a rich educational opportunity while also providing a valuable and much needed service to members of the local community.
Whilst volunteering at iLAC, students will gain valuable hands on experience and develop a greater understanding of legal needs while providing a much needed service to one of England's most deprived boroughs.
The Role: Data Support Volunteer
Our Data Support Volunteers will be based at the UCL Integrated Legal Advice Clinic in central Stratford. iLAC Data Support volunteers will assist with a wide range of integral administrative tasks, giving them a broad and overarching awareness of how a legal clinic works and the types of clients the Clinic supports as well as playing a critical role in ensuring data is collected accurately in turn informing our research and policy work. Tasks may include:
- Case Review: Monthly review of recently opened and closed cases, ensuring all data has been accurately recorded.
- Client Evaluation Follow-Up: Monthly phone calls to clients with recently closed cases to request completion of evaluation forms.
- Data Updates:
- Address missing data in the General Advice Pro system and ensuring case details are up to date.
- Manually input details about how clients discovered our services into historical cases.
- Updating reasons for enquiries being closed to maintain accurate records.
- Reviewing closed cases to confirm that all outcomes are accurately recorded and documented.
- Identify data gaps or recurring issues with data collection
- Research Assistance: Supporting the CAJ Research Fellow with ad hoc research tasks as required.
- iLAC Archiving support: helping to prepare closed cases for archiving and accurately recording data destruction.
Time Committments
We are looking for students who are able to commit to volunteering in-person in Stratford for at least one full day or two half days per week starting in October 2024 during university term-time for both Term 1 and Term 2. Each half day shift takes place between 10am-1pm or 2pm -5pm. A full day shift takes place from 10am - 5pm, with an hour break for lunch. If you are unsure about your timetable for the next academic year, please indicate your current availability and note in your application that it is subject to change.
Students are usually welcome to continue volunteering beyond this date but many prefer to focus on revision in term 3.
The selected student will need to attend mandatory training on 30 October from 2-5pm at UCL iLAC in Stratford.
Pro Bono Skills Development Framework
The Centre for Access to Justice now offers all students engaged in extra-curricular pro bono the opportunity to participate in the Pro Bono Skills Development Framework. This framework allows you to reflect on the skills gained during your placement, aligned with the Aurora Competence Framework. Completing it earns you a Certificate of Commitment to Pro Bono, acknowledging your dedication and skill development. Your participation will help you document and showcase the valuable competencies you've developed, however, please note that participation in the PBSDF scheme is entirely voluntary and will not affect your placement in any way.
Eligibility
This opportunity is open to Year 1 LLB Students.
We are looking for volunteers who can demonstrate:
- Attention to detail
- A commitment to or an awareness of social justice issues;
- Reliability and commitment, good interpersonal and communication skills, including written and oral;
- Ability and willingness to work as part of a team; and
- Strong administrative skills.
