Purpose and Scope:
The UCL Centre for Access to Justice is committed to fostering a commitment to social justice in our students and inspiring the next generation of public interest lawyers. The Centre is also committed to supporting those from underrepresented backgrounds gain valuable work experience, ensuring students are not precluded from taking part in pro bono work because of financial circumstances.
To this end, the CAJ is recruiting up to 3 students as UCL iLAC Easter Interns to support the work of the Clinic during the gap between terms 2 and 3. The UCL Integrated Legal Advice Clinic (iLAC), based in central Stratford, offers local residents free face to face general legal advice on all aspects of social welfare law including welfare benefits and housing. Staffed by UCL law students working under the close supervision of qualified lawyers and advisers, the Clinic offers students a rich educational opportunity while also providing a valuable and much needed service to members of the local community.
Easter Interns will be the first point of contact for clients seeking legal advice. They will be responsible for answering the clinic phone, manning the reception desk and taking new enquiries from clients over the phone and in person under the supervision of iLAC staff.
The Easter Intern may also be asked to assist with administrative tasks such as data collection, sending routine letters, making client appointments and file management.
Working hours
The number of hours available for working depends on the number of eligible applicants we select and their availability. Please be clear and realistic with your availability when making your application. We understand that it this period is dedicated to exam revision and that you may not be able to commit three days per week.
Person Specification and Eligibility:
We are looking for students with:
Strong administrative skills
Willingness and ability to be flexible, open minded, and non-judgmental regarding clients and their problems
Attention to detail
Reliability and commitment
Good interpersonal and communication skills, including oral and written
Ability and willingness to work as part of a team
Previous experience volunteering at UCL iLAC or at a legal advice clinic.
All students who have volunteered at UCL iLAC or a previous legal advice clinic are eligible to apply however we will take into account contextual information as this internship is aimed at students who are from underrepresented backgrounds.
