Internship with Roma Support Group

About the Project: 

Roma people are one of Europe’s largest and most disadvantaged minorities. Since 1998, Roma Support Group has helped thousands of Roma families to overcome some of the barriers which they face and access support with issues such as education, housing, health and poverty.

Roma Support Group’s Advice projects help Roma people living in the UK to access their social welfare rights such as helping to claim benefits and challenge benefit decisions, and helping to manage problem debt. The project delivers a number of activities to facilitate this work including one-to-one advice, group information sessions and publishing information materials.

English language can be a barrier for many of our clients, with the most common spoken languages being Polish, Romanian, Slovak, Czech and other Eastern European languages.

The Role

Roma Support Group Advice Intern

The Advice Intern role will support in the delivery of our advice service, which assists clients in matters of social welfare law such as welfare benefits, debt advice, housing and employment.

This will involve working alongside a small team of experienced advisers and volunteers to support during the advice process, including the opportunity to carry out frontline and casework tasks. We will provide the intern with relevant training, resources, and support and supervision.

• The ability to speak either Polish or Romanian
• Interest in working with disadvantaged groups
• Ability to carry out work remotely
• Good interpersonal skills
• Ability to identify key information
• Ability to deal with sensitive issues
• Understanding of confidentiality
• Comfortable speaking on the phone
• A good standard of written and spoken English
• A non-judgmental approach
• Ability to adhere to organisational policies/procedures

Time Commitment/Schedule:  

We are gradually beginning to mix working from home with office days for small groups of staff and volunteers. We deliver advice for clients by a mix of phone and in-person appointments. Interns will be able to do a mix of volunteering from home and in office/at outreach locations.

A minimum commitment of half a day per week is required.

A full induction to the organisation and role, as well as training and ongoing support/supervision will be available.
