Undergraduate Transition Policy 2018-19

UCL Education Committee has agreed the following policy determining when the new regulations will be implemented for each cohort of students.

For assessibility purposes, the following page is also available as a PDF via:

The Transition Policy is designed as a reference point for Boards of Examiners when making decisions and covers the most common scenarios that might arise.

There are occasionally more complex cases which require more individualised solutions. If you are unsure about the most appropriate course of action, please contact the Academic Policy and Quality Assurance team at academicregulations@ucl.ac.uk who can discuss precedents and options with you.

From September 2018, the following sections of the 2018-19 regulations apply to all students, regardless of their status or year of enrolment:

1. Overarching Principles of Assessment
2. Assessment Information
4. Examinations
5. Reasonable Adjustments
6. Extenuating Circumstances (*with one exception – see below)
7. Marking & Moderation
8. Assessment Feedback
12. Interim Qualifications
13. Boards of Examiners
14. Award of Degrees

The following regulations will depend on the academic session on which the student is enrolled:

3. Module Assessment - inc. calculation of module marks, marking scales, non-condonable components, removal of ‘Completion’, late submissions, word counts
9. Progression & Award – inc. Condonement
10. Classification
11. Consequences of Failure
15. Classification for Undergraduate Students first registering in 2017-18 or earlier

This breaks down as follows:

These students are subject to all of the 2018-19 regulations, with the following exception:

- Classification will be based on the regulations which were in place when the student first enrolled on their programme at UCL.

Repeats and
Deferrals
with Tuition
Students taking a year out to Repeat or Defer with Tuition modules from 2017-18

These students will be ‘fully enrolled’ on the 2018-19 academic session and therefore subject to all of the 2018-19 regulations, with the following exception:

Progressed with Outstanding Resits, Repeats or DeferralsStudents who have progressed but who need to complete an outstanding Deferral, Resit or Repeat from 2017-18 in tandem with their 2018-19 modules
  • When the student finishes the outstanding module(s), the 2017- 18 regulations should be applied to that module. *The EC Panel also retains the right to exclude a module from the UG Completion Requirements up to a maximum of 30 credits.
  • When the student finishes all the modules of the subsequent year, a decision on Progression or Award for 2018-19 needs to be made using all of the relevant 2018-19 regulations.
  • Finalists in this position will be classified using the regulations which were in place when the student first enrolled on their programme at UCL – see Section 15: Classification for Undergraduate Students first registering in 2017-18 or earlier.
InterruptionsStudents returning from an Interruption and enrolling on the 2018-19 academic session
  • These students should be subject to the 2018-19 regulations, including the new regulations on Condonement and the removal of Completion etc.
  • However if the student completed all of the teaching before the Interruption and is only returning to be assessed, the 2017-18 regulations will apply.
  • Finalists returning from interruption will be classified using the regulations which were in place when the student first enrolled on their programme at UCL – see Section 15: Classification for Undergraduate Students first registering in 2017-18 or earlier.
