Changes to credit and non-credit bearing short course regulations for 2022-23
Credit bearing short courses
Provisions in Chapter 10 for credit-bearing short courses had been left incomplete in some places, and needed adjustment in others.
Assessment
In section 3, the changes:
a) clarify that every short course must have a Course Leader who is responsible for ensuring compliance with assessment regulations, and other detailed procedures;
b) update the arrangements for Boards of Examiners. Departments must approve marks once a term either through their Board of Examiners, or they may convene a Sub-Board to consider only marks for credit bearing short courses. Results must be published at least once a term.
Approval
In section 4.2.3, the manual had stated the approval process is “currently in development”. The changes in 4.2.3-4 create an approvals process which is aligned with UCL processes described in Chapter 7, with a few adjustments which are detailed in this section, plus information on the procedure for amending credit-bearing short courses.
Quality review
Section 5.2.1 was a placeholder pending the development of a quality review process. The new 5.2.1-2 creates a quality review process which is aligned with Chapter 4 and is proportionate to the size of credit-bearing short courses.
Non-credit-bearing short courses
The changes relate to the approvals process for non-credit-bearing short courses.
Policy change
Section 4.1.1 reflects a policy change. The policy governing use of the CIQ had previously stated that all new proposed non-credit-bearing short courses including professional development, CPD or other short courses should be submitted for approval by department and faculty if they charged a fee and/or would award a Certificate of Participation. The policy has been changed to require all non-credit-bearing short courses to go through an approvals process with the department and faculty.
Process update
The sections previously numbered 4.1.2 – 4.1.17 have been updated to record that the CIQ proposal form and costing and pricing tool which staff members must fill in to propose a new non-credit-bearing short course have been moved from Portico/SITS to Sharepoint, and provide a link to this.
Sections 4.1.2-12 also update advice on issues to consider when proposing a short course through the CIQ process, and explain the stages of approval. Section 4.1.13 updates information for course approvers, and section 4.1.14 describes the possible amendments to an existing course which would require the course proposer to follow the CIQ process to request approval.
