Governance
- Sustainability is championed at the highest level, with the Provost, Council, and University Management Committee (UMC) providing leadership and resources to reduce our environmental impact.
UCL’s Sustainability team (Sustainable UCL) collaborates closely with institutional teams, students, academics, researchers, and the Students’ Union to support the delivery of UCL’s Sustainability Strategy and ensure its commitments are achieved.
Our Environmental Sustainability Management System (ESMS) is ISO14001-certified, ensuring continuous improvement in our sustainability performance. Our Energy Management System (EnMS), certified to ISO50001, helps us cut energy use and move towards a net-zero campus.
Strategies and policies
Sustainability is embedded into policies from across UCL.
- Addressing global challenges, delivering global impact, and maintaining a sustainable estate are core principles and key enablers of UCL’s 2034 Strategy.
- UCL’s Sustainability Strategy sets the vision and plan for the Institution.
- The Students' Union UCL aims to become the most sustainable students’ union in the UK. Find out about its Sustainability strategy and impact.
- Sustainability is a key element of UCL’s Investment Policy and of UCL’s procurement practices through its Supply Chain Policy.

Partnerships
We work closely with external partners through established networks and actively create new partnerships pioneering new ways to champion sustainability.
- UCL co-developed and signed the Concordat on Environmental Sustainability, setting a cross-sector standard for sustainable research practices.
- UCL is a member of the U7+ Alliance of World Universities, a global coalition committed to addressing pressing societal challenges.
- UCL is proud to be a member of the Circular Economy Network (Ellen MacArthur Foundation) and the Lancet Countdown, reinforcing our commitment to building a more sustainable future.
- UCL is also a partner of the NHS Green Plan, the National Trust, European Space Agency and Camden Council.
