Governance and compliance
UCL's governance structure and charter ensure compliance with the requirements of good governance in higher education, in a responsible and transparent way.
UCL’s governance structure includes the Council, the Academic Board and a formal committee structure. The Council is UCL’s governing body and Academic Board its senior academic authority. The operational management of UCL is the responsibility of the University Management Committee (UMC).
UCL’s research and teaching is organised within a network of faculties and academic departments which are formally established by Council on the advice of Academic Board.
UCL's research activities are governed by our research governance policies and procedures, which outline the expectations for the conduct of research, and define action to be taken in response to alleged research misconduct.
The constitution and governance of UCL are defined in and regulated by the Charter and Statutes and UCL’s Regulations for Management.
UCL is an exempt charity under the Charities Act 2011, with the Office for Students being UCL’s principal regulator.
Governance and compliance at UCL, including all matters relating to policies, risk management, data protection, freedom of speech, and legal services, are managed by UCL's Office of General Counsel.
