A landmark study into legal failings associated with the Post Office scandal, led by UCL and the University of Exeter, looks at the failings of lawyers and the legal system associated with the Post Office scandal – widely regarded as one of the UK’s most significant miscarriages of justice. The study aims to support improvements in culture and ethical practice to prevent similar injustice occurring in the future.
In November 2024, the project was awarded the prestigious 2024 Celebrating Impact Prize for Outstanding Societal Impact. This award honours researchers funded by the ESRC for their exceptional contributions to creating economic or societal impact through their work.
The team includes includes Dr Karen Nokes, Lecturer in Law at UCL Laws (pictured). Their research on lawyers’ roles and behaviour during the Post Office scandal also forms a component of teaching on both the LLB (undergraduate) and LLM (postgraduate) degrees, with students encouraged to consider the practical and ethical challenges facing lawyers in cases of this kind, and the role that public enquiries play in accessing justice.
