As part of the evolution of UCL's Grand Challenges programme, which seeks to tackle complex global, national and local issues through interdisciplinary research and collaboration, we have introduced two new cross-cutting themes: Climate Crisis and Mental Health & Wellbeing. The Climate Crisis theme is led by Professors Mark Maslin and Lisa Vanhala, while Professors Essi Viding and Argyris Stringaris head up the Mental Health & Wellbeing theme. Informed by the expertise of our academic community, these academic leaders will steer investment in faculties and departments to support new areas of research and innovation.

Find out more about the evolved Grand Challenges programme in this short video.

The breadth of engagement with this programme is striking: in the past year (to July 2024) more than 3,000 people took part in Grand Challenge events and more than 60 seed funding awards were made. Since the programme began in 2008, it has served as a powerful research accelerator: the award of £1.9 million in grants across six themes has supported 442 projects and more than 850 researchers and won a further £31 million in funding.
