Launched as part of UCL’s broader vision, the campaign emphasises listening with an open mind and engaging with diverse perspectives.
In 2024, UCL hosted three high-profile public events where leaders from higher education, media, and politics discussed how to engage in debates with mutual respect. A key moment came when President & Provost, Michael Spence, led a discussion at Westminster on the importance of freedom of speech and disagreeing well, which was covered by five national newspapers.
The campaign also inspired a new student module, launching in 2025, designed by political experts Julie Norman and Thomas Gift. The module aims to teach students how to disagree constructively, with a focus on civil discourse in an era of political polarisation. Norman and Gift believe that disagreeing well fosters more inclusive and productive conversations, helping to bridge divides in both academic and societal contexts.
Through events, student modules, and public engagement, UCL is leading the charge in redefining how we approach conflict, encouraging individuals to disagree with respect and to find common ground for a more inclusive and tolerant future.
