From our original site on Gower Street in London's Bloomsbury to our newest, state-of-the-art campus in Stratford, east London – UCL's physical estate comprises over 200 buildings in London and beyond, supporting around 65,000 people as they study, live and work. It is our shared environment and the setting for our success.
Best student city in the world
For the second year in a row, London has been named the world's best student city.
QS Best Student Cities 2025An Estates strategy for the 21st century
Our Estates Strategy 2022–27 has been developed in consultation with the whole UCL community, to address some of the challenges that our people face, for example when using some of our older and more inaccessible buildings. With students at its heart, the strategy sets our our ambitions for a more resilient and inclusive campus, fit for the needs of 21st-century teaching and research.
A focus on sustainability and accessibility
A core theme and underlying principle of the Estates Strategy is UCL’s sustainability commitments and our target to reach net zero carbon by 2030.
Our Inclusive Environments policy and action plan were approved at the end of 2023. We are working to ensure that all of our physical spaces are accessible and welcoming, by embedding inclusive design in all building works going forward and undertaking shorter-term projects to improve our spaces, for example by automating heavy doors and trialling hearing accessibility technology in teaching spaces.
Improving our estate for the next 200 years
Our Bicentennial Physical Legacy works, due to be completed in time for UCL's 200th anniversary in 2026, will ensure that the Quad and Wilkins Building, an iconic and key part of our Bloomsbury campus, are welcoming and accessible for all our staff, students and visitors in the centuries to come.
