Foram Group

A large number of friends, collaborators and students can be considered as belonging to the Foraminiferal Group. Unfortunatelly not all of them could be captured in the gallery...

Honorary Research Fellows

Prof. Felix Gradstein (Currently at Oslo University) is a long-term collaborator on many research projects. Felix is an Honorary Research Fellow in our group, and often stops by to give a lecture to our students.

Dr. Bindra Thusu is an Honorary Research Fellow in our group. Bindra coordinates research & training links with North Africa.

Prof. Sorin Filipescu is a frequent visitor at UCL. He is our SOCRATES Partner in Romania. Besides being our Webmaster, Sorin is coordinating our Micropalaeontological research in the Transylvanian area.

Dr. Robert Wyn Jones is an Honorary Research Fellow in our group and is the co-supervisor of Sev Kender's PhD project. Bob has published numerous research papers on the subject of Foraminifera and has edited several books on applied Micropaleontology.

SOCRATES & international research partners

Prof. M. Adam Gasinski (Jagiellonian University, Krakow) was another frequent visitor to UCL. Adam is our TEMPUS-SOCRATES Partner in Poland. Student exchange between UCL and the Jagiellonian University in Krakow has been going on since 1992.

Prof. Wolfgang Kuhnt (Kiel University) is a long-term collaborator on many research projects. He was our SOCRATES Partner in Germany. Student exchange between UCL and the University of Kiel has been going on since 1996. Our joint research projects have been funded by the British Council.

Prof. Rodolfo Coccioni (University of Urbino) is a long-term collaborator. He is our SOCRATES Partner in Italy. Student exchange between UCL and the University of Urbino has been going on since 1994.

Dr. Miroslav Bubik (Czech Geological Survey) is one of our "Friends of Agglutinated Foraminifera". He often visits to collaborate on research projects. Mirek will be organising the next International Workshop on Agglutinated Foraminifera in 2001.

Dr. Simone Galeotti was a frequent visitor to UCL while he was a post-graduate student at University of Urbino. He is now one of our SOCRATES partners in Urbino, and we have recently published joint research papers on Paleogene DWAF and the Furlo volcanic ash layer.

Prof. Andrej Slaczka is the former Head of Department of the Institute of geological Sciences at the jagiellonian University. We have been conducting joint studies in the Carpathians and published a field guide book on the Carpathian stratigraphy.

Dr. John Whittaker is an emeritus senior researcher at the Natural History Museum. John gives seminars in our Micropaleontology MSc class, and gives our students the opportunity to carry out research projects at the Museum.

UCL academic and technical staff

Dr. Marcelle Boudagher-Fadel works on Mesozoic planktonic foraminifera and larger foraminifera. She teaches in the Foraminiferal course, which is part of our M.Sc. course in Micropalaeontology.

Jim Davy is the backbone of our operations. As our Micropalaeontogical Technician he does everything around here.

Postgraduate students

Dr. John Evans defended his Ph.D dissertation entitled "Late Neogene Agglutinated Foraminifera from the Central Arctic Ocean" in 1998. John currently works as a postdoctoral investigator at St. Andrews University in Scotland.

Dr Rachel Preece defended her Ph.D. thesis on the Miocene deep-water benthic foraminifera from the Atlantic Ocean in 1999. Rachel now works for Chevron Overseas Petroleum in the USA as a basin modeller.

Dr. Theodora van den Akker was a Ph.D. student in our group, sponsored by SAGA Petroleum. Doorke defended her thesis on the Upper Cretaceous micropalaeontology of the West of Shetlands area in 2000.

Dr. Muna Al-Salameen carried out her PhD project on the response of benthic foraminifera to heavy-metal pollution in the Eastern Mediterranean. She has now returned home to Kuwait

Rupert Green has just submitted his PhD thesis on Miocene deep-water benthic foraminifera from the Gulf of Mexico.

Jodie Fisher defended her M.Res. dissertation entitled "The recolonisation by deep-water benthic foraminifera following the 1991 Mt Pinatubo volcanic eruption. She is currently doing a Ph.D. in Micropaleontology at the University of Plymouth.

Simon Hill defended his M.Res. dissertation entitled "The recolonisation by deep-water benthic foraminifera following the 1991 Mt Pinatubo volcanic eruption in 1998. Simon took part in an international expedition to the South China Sea in July, 1998. He currently works for Thames Water.

Sev Kender successfully defended his MSc thesis (with distinction) in 2003, on the Eocene DWAF from the Magura Unit. He is currently working on his PhD project on benthic foraminifera from Miocene deep water clastic environments, jointly supervised by Bob Jones (BP).

Laia Alegret came to UCL from the University of Zaragoza, and is currently a Post-Doctoral Fellow in our group. We have been collaborating on topics dealing with the Cretaceous / Paleogene boundary.

Claudiu Chendes was a visiting SOCRATES student from Babes-Bolyai University, in 2003, and worked on modern foraminifera from the Marmara Sea. He is currently collaborating on further studies of modern foraminifera from the Marmara and Aegean seas, and has just published an article in Acta Paleontologica Romana.

Lorand Silye was a visiting student in our Foram Group in 2004. He is currently a Ph.D. student at the Babes-Bolyai University in Romania, working on Miocene foraminifera from Transylvania. While he was in London, he collaborated on studies of the Miocene agglutinated foraminifera from the Norwegian-Greenland Sea and the Arctic Ocean.

Tania

Tania Micoara is our current SOCRATES student from the BBU in Romania. Tania is currently helping with a variety of projects, and will study the Miocene DWAF from Trinidad.
