Hierakonpolis
Petrie’s students, James Quibell and Frederick Green, excavated this site in 1897-8 and 1898-9. Within a series of chambers that was part of the mudbrick temple structure were a remarkable gold head of a falcon from a statue and a large copper alloy figure of king Pepy I with his son Merenre.
One deposit, called the Main Deposit, yielded an array of objects including a statue of king Khasekhemwy, the famous ceremonial palette of king Narmer and a number of decorated ceremonial mace heads. The fragment of a mace head shown here may be from that deposit.
