Film In 48 Hours ("Doors")
29th to 31st January 1996
This project aimed to involve as many people as possible in making
a film, and to do it in a very short space of time.
We advertised the event around college for a week or so beforhand,
and were pleasently surprised when about 40 people turned up to
our initial meeting on Monday evening.
We formed teams headed by Film Society members, according to
what people were interested in doing.
The script team then headed off to Barabara's flat, whilst the
various crew were given some quick training. Everyone else disappeared
with strict instructions on when to turn up in the morning.
At some awful hour on Tuesday morning, the crew assembled and
carried all the equipment to the first location. All the locations
were around UCL. Over night, the script had been finalised and
a shot list drawn up, ready for filming. The whole day was taken
up with shooting, and was not free from problems, including irate
UCL staff who hadn't been warned that we would be shooting in
their area, and a problem with the Arriflex. The film was taken
to Metrocolor at around 6.00. That evening the sound team and
various musicians worked out what sound (as well as the sync sound
recorded on set) would be needed for the soundtrack. That night,
someone spent a long time transfering the sync sound to 16mm and
indexing it.
Wednesday morning, the processed film was collected, and the
editors got to work. There was a problem in that some of the film
had been fogged due to light leaking into the magazine, so the
story had to be altered somewhat. That morning, the sound team
and musicians recorded some incidental and atmospheric music,
and also a large number of sound effects of doors banging, which
sadly we didn't have time to use.
Wednesday was probably the most stressful day of the three, with
the editors struggling to picsync and edit the film with very
little time indeed, and the sound people trying to put the soundtrack
together in time for the showing at 4.00. The aim was to show
Doors before the evening's big film in the Bloomsbury, but we
didn't quite make it. Also, the twin-band projector we had borrowed
from the Slade refused to work at the last minute.
We therefore showed Doors at the end of the main film, and then
again later for those involved with the production who had missed
it the first time. The finished product was certainly a little
strange, invloving as it did four different themes, script-writers
and directors, but the project was certainly an exciting one,
and we hope to repeat it sometime in the future.
There are plans to re-edit Doors, so we look forward to perhaps
a tidier version. The original edit will be preserved on telecine,
and is on the Film Society viewing tape 1995-96.
