my pic What I do ...

... in my teaching
I am currently UCL college lecturer in Mathematics on the University Preparatory Course in Science and Engineering. Here I teach maths to foundation/1st year undergraduate level to international students from such diverse regions as the middle east, south east asia, and China.

However, my principle and practice here is not just to teach the students how to solve problems, but also to help them learn how to think mathematically and how to read mathematically. I then explicitly includes these last two issues in lectures, tutorials and cswks.

... in my research
My research area is related to mathematics education. Specifically I am interested in the way maths can be read with meaning. To this end I focus on helping students develop the ability to read mathematics text, expressions, solutions and diagrams with a degree of comprehension. My opinion is that students who truly understand mathematics should be able to discuss it in conversation, and do so to certain degree of precision, completeness and specificity. For further discussion refer to my Research summary, PhD (2001), and/or Reading to Learn Maths.
