Lecturer in archives and records management

August 1992-September 2002: Tutor and Director, MA in Archives and Records Management

Teaching activity: teach and assess MA modules in principles of archives and records management, records management and management skills. Successful professional accreditation of MA by Society of Archivists (1993, 1995, 2001). Development of learning materials through a project into distance education and continuing professional development funded by HEFCE Continuing Vocational Education (1995-97); a BLRDD-funded project to prepare a video on key issues in managing electronic records (1995-96); development phase of rm3, commissioned by the Public Record Office for government records staff; inter-departmental project at UCL on teamworking and project management (1996-97). Development of flexible provision of learning through the delivery of the MA part-time on-site at the Public Record Office (1995-97); UCL Working Party on Modular Masters (1994-95) to draft a framework for UCL and piloting of the framework on two MA programmes (ARM and RAMI); open and distance learning templates (Education and Professional Development secondment, 2002-03).

Research projects include: the application of ISAD(G) to the description of datasets (1999, AHRB); mapping descriptive standards across domains (ISAD(G) and SPECTRUM) (2000, British Academy); metadata requirements of ISAD(G) and ISO 15489 (2002, British Academy); E-Term (European Training in Electronic Records Management) (2000-01, EC Leonardo da Vinci fund). Supervisor to PhD students and MA student theses. Current research interests are the development of the British archival profession and the management of electronic records.

Training Department Project Manager

TFPL provides Training, Recruitment and Publishing services to the archive, records management, library and information professions. Researched and planned training programmes, including courses, seminars, conferences and exhibitions, to an agreed budget. Trained and lectured. Initially worked in the Recruitment Department, interviewing candidates, shortlisting candidates for posts against a client's specification and helping and advising employers who sought information staff. Visited Library schools to interview students and lecture on career development seminars.

Assistant Archivist

Archive accessioning, in charge of a large public searchroom, archive cataloguing and indexing, preparing and giving lectures and other presentations, preparing publications, answering written and personal enquiries, advising depositors and surveying records. In 1989, a major exhibition shown at the Chelmsford Festival. In 1987-88, seconded to design and implement a records management system for Essex County Council, preparing budget forecasts and office and storage specifications.
